Short Films by Loi Awat

RELIEF

Relief is a short film in stop-motion animation, currently in post-production. Written and produced by Loi Awat, this animation film is set in defunct Nairobi in the year 2034 -a time when the East African Federation has been realized – and the people of East Africa are desperately dependent on Relief food donated by foreign governments. The movie tells the story of Samora, a young hustler working as a motorcycle deliveryman in Nairobi. His job has him smuggling relief food in what he assumes is an attempt to deliver food to starving communities. It’s business as usual until, by a turn of ill luck, the future of the East African Federation is placed squarely in Samora’s hands. 15% of the funds for this movie were raised through crowdfunding.

BESIDES ANATOMY

Besides Anatomy is a documentary short film that explores the creation of art through the experience of Adam Chienjo, a Kenyan contemporary dancer.  Set in a culture that places little value on the arts, this documentary reveals a side of the creative sector that many Africans do not regularly see: the hard work and determination that goes into creating works of art, as well as the passion of artists who forgo the allure of seeking money in the West in order to work at home and build the African arts industry. The documentary follows contemporary choreographer Adam Chienjo and his colleagues as they prepare and rehearse for a contemporary dance show in Nairobi. The documentary is currently in post-production, and scheduled for release in 2016.
